By late fall, Classic Chevrolet in Bellevue will be offering area residents the opportunity to drive -- and buy -- the new Chevy Volt, a completely electric vehicle named “Car of the Year” for 2011 by Motortrend magazine. Unlike hybrid vehicles currently on the market, the Volt can operate completely on electricity.

Avalon officials showed their appreciation this week for two police officers injured during the pursuit of a suspected drug dealer earlier this year. Working in plainclothes along with Police Chief Tom Kokoski, Officers Sean Khirley and Walt Johnson pursued the fleeing suspect through a 20-foot jump and over a fence, finally nabbing him and recovering a quantity of suspected heroin. Both officers and the suspect were hospitalized after the chase. While Khirley has returned to duty, Johnson remains off-duty with a leg injury.

Another 60 stamp bags of heroin were taken off the streets of Avalon and a suspected dealer arrested.

The Avalon Police Department’s war on drugs -- and drug dealers -- continued last weekend as officers conducted surveillance and netted 30 stamp bags of heroin and one suspected drug dealer.

Police say they observed a drug transaction at the corner of Orchard and Cleveland avenues on Saturday, Dec. 4. Layton Burks, 21, of Florence Avenue, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver, delivery of 10 stamp bags of heroin, resisting arrest and possession of a small amount of marijuana. He was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.

Avalon Police believe they have gotten a local drug dealer and a quantity of suspected crack cocaine off the streets after an investigation led to an arrest Wednesday evening.

Officers obtained information that Theroin Nelson, 25, of 608 Taylor Ave., Avalon, was going to be delivering drugs to a buyer in Peach Alley, behind 707 Ohio River Boulevard. Police set up surveillance of the area and say they observed Nelson in the alley.

A search revealed an undisclosed quantity of suspected crack cocaine in the zipper of the man’s pants, police say.
