Vehicle break-ins have kept Bellevue Police busy in recent weeks.

On Aug. 19, Bellevue Police received three separate reports of thefts from vehicles at different locations: Arch Avenue, Grant Avenue and Washington Avenue.

On Aug. 22, a West Riverview Avenue resident reported that, overnight, cash had been stolen from a car.

On Aug. 24, a South Bryant Avenue resident reported an overnight theft from a vehicle.

A South Harrison Avenue resident reported on Aug. 27 that a vehicle had been entered overnight and property taken.


Russell Bookser Russell Noel Bookser, 63, of Denton, TX, formerly of Pittsburgh and the husband of the late Debra Keast Bookser, died Friday, May 22, 2015 in Presbyterian Hospital, Denton. Mr. Bookser was retired from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). He was a member of Stanfield Masonic Lodge in Denton. He was a former member of Brighton Heights Lutheran Church, Laurel Gardens Volunteer Fire Co. and a social member of Sgt. Joseph D. Caskey American Legion Post #80, all in Pittsburgh.


Dylan McKelvey Dylan Lawrence McKelvey, 19, died Sunday, April 19, 2015. He is survived by his grandparents, Larry and Debbie McKelvey; his brother, Devin E. McKelvey; and aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial mass was held in Risen Lord Church on Saturday.

Dolores Hamilton Dolores A. Lipinski Hamilton, wife of the late Robert W. Hamilton Sr., died Thursday, May 14, 2015.


James Malloy James Regis Malloy, 94, of Emsworth, died Monday, April 6, 2015. Mr. Malloy was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was retired from Duquesne Light Co. after 44 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy R. Gastner Malloy; and three children, Bonnie Bass and her husband James, Diane Barr and her husband James and Ronald Regis Malloy. He was preceded in death by his sister, Sister Mary Sheila Malloy. There was no visitation and services and burial were private. Arrangements were made by the Orion C. Pinkerton Funeral Home, Avalon.

Northgate teacher Gretchen Monahan has another opportunity to attend a SMART technology program, this time at the company’s headquarters in Seattle, WA.

Monahan was one of only a handful of teachers chosen from across the United States and Canada to attend two consecutive summer programs that allowed her to learn the technology and return to pass it on to other Northgate teachers.

All expenses have been paid for the SMART amp Champ Camp in Seattle.


Mildred Silvester Mildred J. Silvester, 81, of Crafton died Monday, Nov. 17, 2014. She is survived by her son, Pete Silvester and his wife Carin. She was preceded in death by two children, Sheryl and Dino Silvester. There was no visitation and burial was private. Arrangements were made by the Orion C. Pinkerton Funeral Home, Avalon.

Elizabeth Barger DePalma Elizabeth "Betty" Barger DePalma, Avalon, Pa, formerly of Stoneboro and Sewickley, PA, passed away peacefully Jan. 14, 2014, following a lengthly illness, surrounded by her devoted family in her home. Born in Sewickley, July 14, 1929, to the late Guy William and Bernice Gilliland Barger. She was a 1947 graduate of Sewickley High School and a graduate of Thiel College, Greenville, Pa.


When Melinda Ward, formerly of Emsworth, signed on for a trip that would take her to Palestine and Israel, she knew it was not going to be a vacation similar to trips that religious pilgrims make to sites in the Holy Land.

A youth counselor at Holy Family Institute, Melinda, 25, was one of 23 delegates making the journey organized by the Washington-based Interfaith Peace Builders (IFPB), with other travelers joining her from across the United States.


The Quaker Valley Council of Governments (COG) and its member municipalities will sponsor a Recycling Day on Saturday, Nov. 2, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Sewickley Borough will host the program located behind the Sewickley Borough Municipal Building on Washington Street.

Only residents of Aleppo, Avalon, Bell Acres, Bellevue, Ben Avon, Edgeworth, Emsworth, Glenfield, Glen Osborne, Haysville, Kilbuck, Leet, Leetsdale and Sewickley may participate. Identification is required. No commercial businesses will be permitted to participate.


M.L. "Petey" Hager On Dec. 27, 2012 Petey passed away quietly at the age of 89 in Sykesville, MD. Her energy, enthusiasm and spirit for life will be incredibly missed. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 6, at 2 p.m. at Community Presbyterian Church of Ben Avon, 7501 Church Ave., followed by a social gathering in the fellowship room to celebrate her life.

Kathleen Dunn Kathleen Ann "Kathy" Walsh Dunn, 72, of Waxhaw, NC, formerly of Bellevue, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012 in Hospice House of Union County, Monroe, NC. Mrs. Dunn enjoyed reading. She is survived by her husband, Joseph T. Dunn; four sons, Buddy Dunn and his wife Elizabeth and Patrick Dunn and his wife Callie, all of Seattle, WA, Christopher Dunn and his wife Sara of Downingtown, PA and Kevin Dunn and his wife Heather of Pataskala, OH; two siblings, Joe Walsh and Jane Walsh, both of Santa Cruz, CA; and eight grandchildren.


A number of thefts were reported to Bellevue Police in recent weeks.

Tires were reported stolen from a vehicle on Washington Avenue on Sept. 12.

Items were reported stolen from a vehicle on Orchard Avenue on Sept. 13.

A wedding ring and a pair of diamond earrings were reported stolen from a Dawson Avenue home on Sept. 16.

Golf clubs were stolen from a car left unlocked at jefferson and South Euclid avenues on Sept. 16.

The manager of an Orchard Avenue apartment building reported the theft of amplifiers on Sept. 17.


Ask most adults what they recall watching on TV back when they were 6 or 7 years old and they'll probably name their favorite cartoons, followed by some more cartoons, followed by more of the same.

There are exceptions, of course, and Carson Bruno, a 2005 Avonworth grad, would be one of them.


Walter Todorowski Walter E. Todorowski, 63, of Orlando, FL, formerly of Brighton Heights, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Todorowski; his mother, Frances Todorowski; and six siblings, Elaine Scorza, Mary Jean Walko, Lisa Papinchak, Donald, Daniel and Michael Todorowski.

Harry Comerer Harry S. "Hank" Comerer, 94, formerly of Emsworth and Avalon and husband of the late Bertha M. "Betty" Comerer, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012.


Bellevue Council, voting unanimously at Tuesday’s regular meeting, authorized several grant applications.

The borough will ask for a $25,000 Community Development Block Grant to demolish abandoned houses at 650 North Ave., 591 Forest Ave. and 164 Washington Ave. The borough’s contribution would be $4,500.

Another CDBG application will seek $212,500 for the second phase of the Lincoln Avenue streetscape. The borough’s matching share would be $37,500.


Craig Thomas Slavicek On Saturday, April 21, 2012, age 21 of Girdwood, AK, formerly of Bellevue and Floyd, VA. Beloved son and step-son of Thomas and Jennifer Slavicek; Brother of Alexis Riedell and Zoe Slavicek; Step-brother of Daniel and Adam Bistrican; Grandson of Nancy Schoen; Step-grandson of Glen and Kathy Wissner and Ginny Peterson; Nephew of Adelle (Sissy) Slavicek Nichols, Brandy Caskey, Duane Slavicek and Maureen O'Donnell. Also survived by many loving relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother Diana Duffy.


Bellevue Police investigated the burglary of a Madison Avenue building on Jan. 26. They also assisted Ross Township Police the same day with a reported burglary in progress at an East Orchard Avenue home.

unidentified male was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit on Jan. 28. Police say they observed the man assaulting a female on Sumner Avenue.

Police suspect a pick pocket of stealing from a 71-year-old woman in a business in the 400 block of Lincoln Avenue on Jan. 28.


Avalon Police arrested their second drunk bicyclist in as many weeks after coming across a man on Jackman Avenue, tangled in his bicycle, on Sept. 3. David Lorenzo, 53, of Jefferson Avenue, Bellevue, was charged with driving under the influence.

Police were able to find and arrest a man who confessed to stealing construction materials from beneath the Birmingham Avenue bridge when a witness got the license number of the truck used in the theft. Police say that James Rickard, 36, of Washington Avenue, Bellevue, had stolen tools and materials valued at $1,500 on Sept. 2.


Joseph Barshowski Joseph Barshowski of Pittsburgh, husband of the late Mary Ann Barshowski, died Saturday, July 30, 2011. He is survived by his brother, David Barshowski and his wide Orysia; a nephew, Donald; and a niece, Nancy. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Eva; and five siblings, Michael, Stephania, Alexander, Frank and John. Friends were received at Thomas P. Kunsak Funeral Home, North Side. A funeral service was held in St. George Ukrainian Church on Tuesday. Contributions are suggested to his church at 3445 California Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15212.

Joann Johnson Joann A. Kaib Johnson, 65, of Glenfield and Ohio Township, died Tuesday, May 17, 2011. Mrs. Johnson enjoyed coloring, Bingo and trips to the casino.

A Westmoreland County man decided to avoid arrest in Emsworth Tuesday by running from police, and was later taken into custody in Haysville.

Police say that John Domenic Bracken, 22, from Greensburg, fled from the scene of a traffic stop on Greenwood Avenue and Washington Way. He was found by Sewickley Police a short time later running along the railroad tracks. Bracken has been charged with providing false identification to law enforcement, resisting arrest, escape, and prohibited acts.
