Elizabeth Barger DePalma Elizabeth "Betty" Barger DePalma, Avalon, Pa, formerly of Stoneboro and Sewickley, PA, passed away peacefully Jan. 14, 2014, following a lengthly illness, surrounded by her devoted family in her home. Born in Sewickley, July 14, 1929, to the late Guy William and Bernice Gilliland Barger. She was a 1947 graduate of Sewickley High School and a graduate of Thiel College, Greenville, Pa.

Mary Ann Bellin Mary Ann Bellin, 82, of Bellevue, formerly of Shadyside and wife of the late Clyde A. Bellin, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013. She is survived by five children, Lisa Froehlich and her husband Ron, Thomas Bellin, Paula Salas and her husband Oscar, Cynthia Zingaro and her husband Joseph and Timothy Bellin; her sister, Clara Josephites; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She is survived by two children, Shawn Tunney and Maureen Cortazzo and her husband Patrick; four brothers, Ronald and his wife Rose, Donald, Charles and his wife Kathleen and John Scheidlmeier and his wife Sally; four grandchildren, Patrick Jr., Jack, Casey Shea and Casey Ann; and nieces and nephews. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Todorowski; his mother, Frances Todorowski; and six siblings, Elaine Scorza, Mary Jean Walko, Lisa Papinchak, Donald, Daniel and Michael Todorowski.

When a bad storm last spring wiped out the shooting range used to train area police officers, there was more than a little concern.

“We rely on this,” said Avalon Police Chief Tom Kokoski, who explained that the range buried deep in the woods of Sewickley has, for many years, provided officers from 13 different suburban police departments the opportunity to train for annual weapons certifications.

The heavy rains in the former reservoir caused landslides and flooding, destroyed the frames used to hold targets, and swept away a storage building.

She is survived by her sister, Rose Seethaler; and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Constantine and Walburga Rauwolf Rosenberger; and her sister, Marie Savage. Friends were received at McDonald-Linn Funeral Home, Avalon. Gladys Weinzierl Gladys B. Pigoni Weinzierl, 90, of Ohio Township, wife of the late Joseph W. Weinzierl Jr., died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011. She is survived by two sons, J. Buster Weinzierl and his wife Sally and Michael J. Weinzierl and his wife Susan; her sister, Eva Stankunas; and four grandchildren, Mary H. Rolser and her husband David, Joseph, Andrea and Melinda Weinzierl. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Philomena Pigoni; and five siblings, Joseph Pigoni, Charles Pigoni, Vi Giovenelli, Betty Andrade and Mitzi Lasp.

The first of three planned construction phases that will create a skate plaza in Bellevue’s Bayne Park was approved Tuesday evening, however reluctantly by some officials.

Citizens -- including some from Sewickley and Pittsburgh -- urged Bellevue Council to move forward with the project, which had been stalled after officials discovered they had been misinformed about the cost.

Alma Fleming Alma Eleanor Oestreicher Fleming, 97, of Wadsworth, OH, formerly of Kilbuck Township and wife of the late James D. Fleming, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2011. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Livingston and her husband Paul; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three nephews; and a niece. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Nellie Oestreicher; and her brother, Charles Oestreicher and his wife Helene. Friends were received at O'Brien Funeral Home, North Side, until the time of services on Friday. Burial was in Rosedale Cemetery.

Irene Hawk Irene B. Hawk, 96, of Ben Avon, wife of the late Dr. Brainard Hawk, died Wednesday, April 27, 2011. She is survived by four children, Dr. Alan Hawk and his wife Sandra, Dr. David Hawk and his wife Brenda, Linda Kluge and her husband Roger and Susan Coy; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey, Noah, Lisa, Ellen, Leah, David Jr. and Jessica; and three great-grandchildren, Kelly, Madeline and Paul. She was preceded in death by her son, Paul Hawk.

Several members of the Three Rivers Rowing Association grouped up last weekend to row a distance that, if they would have been on water, would have taken them from Pittsburgh to Columbus, OH.

The young athletes weren't training for an upcoming competition. And they weren't showing off their skills for passersby at Ross Park Mall, where they had set up 10 ergometers, machines that simulate distances and intensity of rowing.

Louise Griffith Louise Rose Conte Griffith, 83, of Newton, MA, formerly of Monongahela and wife of the late Blair A. Griffith, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2010. Mrs. Griffith was a 1945 graduate of Monongahela High School and a 1949 graduate of Penn State University with a degree in journalism. She worked at West Penn Power in the public relations department, then taught for 20 years in the Franklin Regional School District. She enjoyed politics, sports, reading and crossword puzzles.

Aloysius Gallagher Aloysius M. Gallagher, 70, of Allison Park, died Tuesday, June 29, 2010. Mr. Gallagher worked as a consultant in human resources. He was a lector at St. Ursula Church in Allison Park and a volunteer and member of the Renew Group. He taught at the Heinz School of Carnegie Mellon University, St. Francis University, LaRoche College and Butler County Community College.
