Several Northgate students have earned the opportunities to showcase their vocal talents at events scheduled throughout the Pittsburgh area over the next few weeks.

Senior Chase Dermond, who sang his way through middle school chorus and the high school concert choir, will perform as a member of District I Chorus at Quaker Valley High School, Feb. 6-8.

"It's a great honor to represent our school in Districts, and I hope to make my school proud," Chase said.

Veterans Day became a four-day tribute to those who have served in the military, as North Boroughs vets were invited to take part in ceremonies at local schools and in municipalities.

Emsworth Borough took the opportunity to dedicate a new memorial plaque that honors two residents who died in the “War on Terror,” Patrick B. Kenny and Robert N. Gilbertson.

The plaque has been installed at the borough hall, and was dedicated during a ceremony on Sunday afternoon.

Pat Dragowski admits that she feels honored by being named the North Boroughs YMCA's “Volunteer of the Year,” but she is quick to add that the honor should be shared by an enthusiactic board of directors.

Pat grew up in Point Breeze, lived in Bellevue in the mid-1970s, and then moved to Kilbuck after marrying her husband, Robert. She said that the Y has been important to her through all of her years in the North Boroughs.

"I exercised there for years, and my daughter, Laura, was in many of the classes while she was growing up."

Eric Cosmides has good reason to be leading up a team of volunteers who will assemble 800 brown bag lunches for cyclists riding in the Tour de Cure fund-raiser for the American Diabetes Association this weekend in Harmony, PA.

His efforts will serve as his senior project at Avonworth High School, but, more importantly, it will send a personal message of the need to find a cure from someone who has lived with diabetes for more than six years.

"I was diagnosed with Type I juvenile diabetes in May of 2005," Eric, 17, said.

When Alex Riddle addressed his fellow seniors as class valedictorian at Avonworth High School's graduation ceremonies in June, nobody doubted his claim to being at the top of the Class of 2010, his grade point average being 4.28.

Dolores Stapanik Dolores "Dolly" Stapanik died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015. She is survived by her sister, Ruth Hardesty; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Rozalia Stapanik; and four siblings, Mary Louise Wisniowski, John Stapanik, Agnes Kosinski and Helen Westover. Friends were received at Thomas P. Kunsak Funeral Home, North Side. A funeral mass was held in Risen Lord Church on Friday. Joanne Searight Joanne M. Searight, 81, of Brighton Heights, wife of the late Lynn R. Searight, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015.

Paul Glevicky Jr. Paul A. Glevicky Jr., 78, of Brighton Heights, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015. He worked in the steel industry for 47 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and playing bingo.

Evelyn Guzzo Evelyn Arndt Guzzo, 66, of Coraopolis, died Tuesday, July 21, 2015 in Good Samaritan Hospice of Beaver. Mrs. Guzzo was a 1966 graduate of Moon High School. She served on the Coraopolis Public Library board for nine years. She was an avid reader and a sketch artist.

A young couple who have just moved into Avalon approached the borough council at its regular meeting Tuesday to ask if they can have chickens in their back yard.

Rendon Elsesser and his wife, Whitney Shields, said they would like to keep about six hens in a “run” they would build in the back yard of their Taylor Avenue home. Their intent is to use the eggs the chickens produce. There would not be a rooster, they said.

The rare type of leukemia that claimed Avonworth teacher Jeff Boggess's life on July 5 came on so suddenly and then progressed so insidiously once diagnosed last October that those who knew him found it difficult to believe.

Mr. Boggess, who lived in Ohio Township, had taught social studies at the high school since 2001, using traditional as well as contemporary methods to provide relevance to the lessons of history, working to ensure that those lessons would long be remembered.

Dr. James V. Jordan Dr. James V. Jordan, 72, of Bellevue, died July 6, 2015. Mr. Jordan practiced law for many years from his office in Bellevue. He was the beloved husband of the late Sara "Sally" Jordan; son of the late Harry and Mary Jordan; brother of Harry and the late William Jordan; uncle of Jessica and Meggan. Visitation will be held Friday, July 10, 2-8 p.m. at Thomas P. Kunsak Funeral Home, Brighton Heights. A Blessing Service will be held Saturday, july 11, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by interment at Greenwood memorial Park, Lower Burrell.

Robert Besser Robert John Besser, 79, of Tucson, AZ, formerly of Bellevue and husband of the late Betty Schiellien Besser, died Sunday, June 7,2015. Mr. Besser was a Bellevue High School and Duquesne University graduate. He is survived by two sisters, Betty Haughin of Zelienople and Mary Alice Naylor of Bradenton, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emerick and Elizabeth Pohlot Besser; and his brother, Emerick Besser. Services and burial were held in Arizona.

Dale Pritchard Dale E. Pritchard, 50, of Avalon, died Wednesday, June 10, 2015. Mr. Pritchard was a lifetime member of Kilbuck Township Volunteer Fire Co. He is survived by his wife, Cathy A. Trischler Pritchard; two children, Joseph E. Pritchard and his wife Kristen and Katelyn M. Pritchard; two siblings, Glen Pritchard and Wendy Crawford; his grandson, Landon J. Pritchard; and nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his partner, Jeanne McMahan and her daughter, Lesley Allison and her husband Harry; and his brother, Joel Dickson and his wife Carolyn. Russell Bookser Russell Noel Bookser, 63, of Denton, TX, formerly of Pittsburgh and the husband of the late Debra Keast Bookser, died Friday, May 22, 2015 in Presbyterian Hospital, Denton. Mr. Bookser was retired from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). He was a member of Stanfield Masonic Lodge in Denton. He was a former member of Brighton Heights Lutheran Church, Laurel Gardens Volunteer Fire Co. and a social member of Sgt. Joseph D. Caskey American Legion Post #80, all in Pittsburgh.

Avonoworth valedictorian Ryan Johnston, the son of Michelle and Keith Johnston of Ben Avon, will attend Georgetown University where he intends to major in finance.

Avonworth salutatorian Billie Jo Richardson, daughter of Michele Richardson of Ohio Township, will attend Clemson University, where she intends to major in biology. Billie Jo is the recipient of an annual $7,500 merit scholarship.

She will attend Duquesne University where she intends to major in chemistry and education while minoring in English, botany and math.
