After winning their first section title in 41 years, the Avonworth boys' basketball team will take the court Tuesday looking to expunge all doubts that they are once again the team to beat in the section this year.

Last year, the team undoubtedly had one of the best seasons Avonworth boys’ basketball has seen in a long time, finishing with a 17-6 regular season record and defeating Frazier in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs. This year, they are looking to use that momentum to propel their team into a position to excel at an even greater level.

An undefeated Avonworth basketball team rolled into Northgate territory Tuesday night, not leaving until they had maintained their own unblemished section record and dealt the Flames their fourth sectuion loss, 60-44.

The Flames found themselves in the hole early, as the ‘Lopes worked their set offense and pounded it inside to Chris O'Malley and Eric Gallupe. The success of Avonworth's inside game was apparent when the Flames' Alex Marusic picked up his second foul with only 2:30 elapsed off the clock.

Despite his team's winning streak being stretched to five games with a 53-40 victory over the Freedom Bulldogs last Friday night, Avonworth boys’ basketball head Coach Dan Bradley is still looking for improvement from his players.

"I don't think we played too well tonight," he said. "We missed a lot of open shots. I'm not sure of our foul shooting, but we need to improve and keep going."
