Cheerleaders are national champs

The Avonworth Eagles Competition Cheer Team recently brought home the title of national champions. The team is made up of 17 girls, ages 7-14, from the surrounding area. The team practices almost year-round for a competition season that starts in January and lasts for about three months. The girls perform at several local competitions to earn enough points to qualify for regional and national sanctioned events. This year, the team won a bid to the U.S. Finals Cheer & Dance Competition in Virginia Beach, which is one of eight sanctioned events around the United States. According to head coach Stephanie Hightower, “The girls prevailed through obstacles and performed a flawless routine” “They just nailed it,” she said. The team won first place in the Level 1 Youth Traditional Category. The first place victory in Virginia Beach qualified the team for the Champions Challenge, a virtual contest that combines winners from all eight locations into one final virtual event. This allows teams to save funds by competing regionally, and then overall division winners from each location advance to get ranked nationally against overall division winners from all locations. The 2018/19 Avonworth Eagles team took home a first place victory and the title of national champions. Each member of the cheer team will receive some extra bling on their fingers with a championship ring for their hard work and accomplishments.
