Quaker Valley COG to hold recycling day May 4

The Quaker Valley Council of Governments (COG) and its member municipalities will sponsor a a Recycling Day on Saturday, May 4, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Avalon Borough will host the program at the parking lot of the public works garage located at Frederick Street and New Brighton Road.

Only residents of of Aleppo, Avalon, Bell Acres, Bellevue, Ben Avon, Edgeworth, Emsworth, Glen Osborne, Glenfield, Haysville, Kilbuck, Leet, Leetsdale and Sewickley may participate. Identification is required. No commercial businesses will be permitted to participate.

The following items will be accepted: oil (brought in some type container); lead/acid batteries from cars, motorcycles and boats; passenger and light truck tires, no rims, (not to exceed 18 inches), no large truck tires or off the road tires; $2 fee.

Latex and oil-based paint only (no aerosol cans) 5-gallon bucket, $3.50; 1-gallon can or smaller, $1.

Computers and electronic related items, no charge. Computer equipment: desktops, laptops, server towers and racks and networking switches. LCD and CRT monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards and mouse; fax machines, UPS single battery, analog telephone systems/components, stereo/boom box, large speakers (pair), DVD, VCR, Tvio, cable box, DVR and small appliances (can openers, toasters, cell phones, PDAs and gaming systems. There is a $10 charge for hard drive data destruction (drives secured and destroyed later).

Document shredding, secured and shred later; Each box 18"x10"x11" or smaller, $5.

Freon appliances including refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, wine coolers, and water coolers, $15.

Reusable building materials that will be accepted: cabinets; plumbing fixtures; windows in frames, (no broken glass, no aluminum storm windows); doors, (no broken glass, no rotted or split wood); lumber, no individual pieces shorter that four feet, no areas that are rotted or stained with oil, grease or dirt, no nails; tiles (new and in sealed boxes); hardware; hardwood flooring; countertops; insulation; shingles/siding; light fixtures; furniture (not upholstered).

Unacceptable materials: old, out of code electrical products; non-freon large appliances; items with exposed lead paint; items missing major parts, (cabinets without doors); asbestos siding and tiles.

Emsworth recycling help

In conjunction with the Quaker Valley Council of Government’s recycling day on Saturday, May 4, Emsworth Council is offering to collect recycling materials from senior households in Emsworth Borough. Items for recycling are listed in the QVCOG article in The Citizen.

Items must be ready for pick-up by 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 4. Any item that has a fee associated with it must be paid in full, in cash, to the council member who will pick up the item to take to the drop-off location.

Seniors must register by calling (412)761-1161 or at the borough office weekdays 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. before April 29 if interested in this recycling offer.
