I have no problem with employers being generous to their employees. If I made more money, I'd be more generous with my own.

I have a problem, however, with my tax dollars being used to give government employees benefits that most local businesses can't afford to give their own people.

We just received word from PennDOT that the planned closing of Union Avenue will not occur this weekend after all. Motorists can, however, expect lane closings on I-279.

There are a number of stories in this week's edition of The Citizen that you won't want to miss. Among them are:

For gardeners, these final weeks of July are some of summer's best. Despite a lack of rain, our flower gardens are peaking, and our vegetable gardens are living up to their promises of abundance. Most of the heavy work of spring and early summer is over, and we can sit back now and enjoy what we have created.

I am a big believer in the power of gardening on a multitude of levels.

This week's newspaper includes a special Summer Sales supplement that you won't want to miss! Businesses throughout the North Boroughs have come up with some great special offers that will save all of us some money as we settle into the heart of summer. See the "Subscribe" page of this Web site for a list of newsstands where you can find a copy of this special issue of The Citizen.

The annual North Boroughs Independence Day fireworks celebration will have to be delayed this year due to severe damage to Avalon’s park caused by recent rains.

This year’s event was planned for Friday, July 3, at Avalon’s park on New Brighton Road. Last week’s heavy rains, however, caused flooding from the creek that borders the ballfields. A retaining wall and fence were undermined almost the entire length of the fields, and the fields themselves were covered with flood waters, mud and debris.

We here at The Citizen are absolutely thrilled with how our readers have responded to our new Web site. Over the weekend following last Friday's launch of the site, we received visitors from nine different states, plus the District of Columbia. We also got a few hits from foreign countries, but we're pretty sure the guy from the Czech Republic was not interested in the Bellevue Police News.

At last! Welcome to the debut of The Citizen on-line!

We've been working hard the last few months to create a Web presence that will both complement and enhance the print newspaper that has been serving the North Boroughs for more than 30 years. We're very excited to finally share with you the fruits of our labor.
