Emsworth Borough Council has cleared the way for another bar to open up shop in Emsworth.

Council unanimously authorized, at its regular meeting on June 11, the transfer of a liquor license to Gennaro's Cafe, Inc. at 8070 Ohio River Blvd. The license will be coming from an bar in McKeesport, according to borough solicitor Mike Marmo.

A public hearing was held prior to the council meeting for residents to voice their concerns over the transfer. There were no comments from the public.

The Avonworth girls' basketball team will have familiar face coaching from the bench next season.

The board announced that Bob Schulz would return as the varsity girls' head basketball coach for the 2009-10 school year.

The longtime coach retired two years ago, turning over the reins to former Lady ‘Lope and assistant coach Julie Moehring. Moehring announced her resignation at the end of the 2008-09 season, citing a need to devote time to other areas of her life.

Taxpayers in the Avonworth School District may be looking at a lower millage increase than previously projected, with stimulus and reserve funds making up the difference.

Now that everyone knows the name of the position, Bellevue Borough will advertise for a new borough office clerk/secretary.

Approval of an expenditure of no more than $500 for advertising was delayed at the June 2 council meeting when the motion initially did not include the job title as listed in the borough's personnel code. Council member Linda Woshner said that she had requested at the finance committee meeting that the code be checked for the proper title, but that had not been done.

The Avonworth School District may be going into the concession stand business, much to the dismay of booster groups who want the fund-raising opportunity.

The concession stand at varsity football games has long been the domain of the football boosters, with other booster groups relegated to peripheral positions and sales items. According to Avonworth School Board president David Oberdick, however, the football boosters are giving up the concession due to a lack of volunteers.

Bellevue Council accepted a bid for a borough vehicle at council's regular meeting on June 2.

Council accepted the bid of $1,850 from Howard Johnston for a 1986 Chevy 1-ton dump truck.

Ruth Andlor

Ruth Andlor, 89, of Bellevue, wife of the late Joseph Andlor Jr., died Friday, May 29, 2009.

Mrs. Andlor had been a volunteer at North Suburban Adult Services and Lutheran Services Society of Bellevue. She was a member of ISDA Amity Lodge #45 and the Church of the Assumption.

Two new police officers have been hired by Bellevue Borough, with a third expected to join them later this summer.

Phase III of Bellevue's mandatory sewer repair project will begin soon, as the borough council unanimously accepted a bid for the work at its June 2 meeting.

Bellevue Council accepted a bid from Fleming-Walker Inc. in the amount of $249,202, which will be paid from the borough's sewer surcharge fund.

An Ohio Township subdivision plan received final approval from the township’s board of supervisors at their June 1 meeting.

The supervisors approved the subdivision plan for the Five Mile Development Plan, Creekside Lane, which is located along Camp Horne Road at the I-279 North off-ramp.

Township manager John L. Sullivan Jr. said that the township has not heard of any specific plans for the site.

Bellevue's Summer Solstice Spectacular received several last minute approvals from Bellevue Council at its June 2 meeting, but one item was left undone when memories failed.

Council unanimously approved closing a portion of North Sprague Avenue, from Lincoln Avenue to the parking lot entrance, on Saturday evening, June 20, for a street dance.

The entire Hawley Avenue municipal lot will be closed from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. that day for a craft market.

Motorists can expect delays due to traffic restrictions on a couple different state highways.

I-279 (the Parkway North) will be reduced to a single lane southbound this weekend, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday and continuing thgrough 4 p.m. on Sun-day.

The state will be patching concrete between the Bellevue/West View and I-79 interchanges. No northbound lane restrictions are planned for this weekend.

The Avonworth School District now has final approval from Ohio Township to place two modular classrooms at the elementary school.

The trailers will provide additional classrooms beginning next fall.

Placement of the trailers was approved unanimously by the Ohio Township Supervisors at their meeting on June 1.

Bellevue police and fire officials were unable to confirm Thursday that the fatal May 15 fire at the Bellevue Mansions apartment building was an arson.

The fire, which resulted in the death of a 22-year-old male and the evacuation of more than 100 residents, has been under investigation by the Allegheny County fire marshal’s office.

A Pittsburgh man was stabbed during an argument at the Avalon Motel on Wednesday, but accounts differ as to who wielded the knife.

The victim, suffering from a stab wound to the left side of his chest, called police from a pay phone outside the Ohio River Boulevard motel. Police say he identified his assailant as his girlfriend, still inside a motel room.

Police say that the girlfriend pointed to her ex-boyfriend as the responsible person, reporting that the two men began fighting and she hid in the bathroom.
