Young girls’ team starts with win

After a couple of sub-par seasons for the Avonworth softball team, new coach Jenna Muncie will lead a relatively young team this year, but is looking forward to getting things turned around.

"Coming in we've tried to change the culture here a little bit -- we're taking softball more serious now," said Muncie, who was the head coach at Upper St. Clair for the past four years.

The Lady ‘Lopes opened their season this past Tuesday at OLSH and defeated the Chargers 13-3.

"We were driving the ball and that was big," said Muncie.

According to Muncie, pitcher Sydney Smith did a great job on the mound, earning the victory while contributing offensively with a three-run homer in the section opener.

Avonworth played their home opener under the lights on Wednesday night, but struggled with only four hits offensively as they fell to Southside Beaver 10-3.

"I have to hand it to their pitcher," said Muncie of Southside's pitcher, who recorded 12 strike-outs. "She was dominating and she controlled both sides of the plate."

The Lady ‘Lopes got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when Katelyn Weiser and Elaina Tkaczenko began with base hits, and Addy Helfrich cleared the fence in centerfield for a three-run homer.

"We lost tonight, but they never fail to give it their best effort and that's what I'm looking for here at Avonworth," said Muncie.
