Trucker makes wrong turn

A trucker from out of state who said he was unfamiliar with the twists and turns of Western Pennsylvania highways inadvertently took a wrong turn last Friday night when he lost control of his work truck on Union Avenue.

The accident occurred right at the border of Avalon, Bellevue and Ross Township, with first responders dispatched from all three municipalities just before 11:30 p.m. when a truck was reported over the steep hillside near 80 Union Ave., across from the Hillcrest apartments in Bellevue.

Avalon Fire Chief Chuck Berie said that the rain earlier that evening made it especially difficult to reach the vehicle. Avalon Police say that the driver did not appear to be seriously injured.

Another emergency arose when it was quickly discovered that the truck was leaking diesel fuel into the creek that runs through Avalon Park. Berie said that the leak was stopped and contained, but that the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and other agencies were notified.

The accident remains under investigation by Ross Township Police, who said that one adjacent property sustained damage, and that environmental inspectors have been on-scene.
