Avonworth faced off against the Aliquippa Quips in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs last Saturday at Sewickley Academy, with the Quips defeating the 'Lopes by a score of 72-50.

Aliquippa won the opening tip and proceeded to start their rout of the Antelopes, with Eli Kasonavich kicking things off by hitting a three-pointer on the opening possession. Avonworth junior Deon Thomas responded for the 'Lopes, making a two-point jump shot.

The Quips began to find their forwards down low and quickly gained a 10-point lead, wrapping up the first quarter with the Quips up 16-6.

Aliquippa's Will Gipson, a Pitt football recruit, caught fire in the second quarter, leading a 12-point run by making a three-pointer and throwing down slam dunks.

The teams headed to the locker room with Aliquippa up 42-20.

The third quarter looked bright for the 'Lopes as they began to fight their way back into the game. Thomas, along with Mike Donovan, led an 8-0 run for the 'Lopes, leading Avonworth to outscore the Quips 13-12 heading into the final quarter.

But Avonworth was never able to cut down the lead, and lost, 72-50.
