An Ohio Township Police officer remains hospitalized after being seriously injured in a traffic accident last Saturday, April 12.

Longtime officer Don Manz underwent surgery Monday to repair several vertebrae in his back that were broken when the police cruiser he was driving was hit broadside on Ohio River Boulevard near the Toms Run intersection.

According to Ohio Township Police Chief Beaver Micklos, Manz was stationed at the Toms Run intersection and was conducting a traffic detail. He had just clocked a speeding southbound vehicle and, turning on lights and sirens, had pulled out to cross the northbound lanes and stop the vehicle heading toward Pittsburgh.

The police cruiser was hit broadside near the driver’s side door. Firefighters and paramedics were summoned, and extricated Manz from the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the cruiser also was injured and taken to the hospital by ambulance. Police do not believe he sustained severe injuries and he has been released from the hospital.

Manz had just returned to work with the Ohio Township Police Department several days before the accident after having been off work with a disability for several months.
