Judith California
Judith Ann Papania California, 44, of Ross Township,. died Monday, Aug. 23, 2010.
Mrs. California was a graduate of North Hills High School and Carnegie Mellon University. She worked as a chemical engineer for several years.
She is survived by her husband, John M. California; two daughters, Margot A. and Juliet J. California; her parents, Ronald and Joanne Leo Papania; two siblings, James Papania and his wife Deb and Janice Duch and her husband John, her mother-in-law, Connie Valentine California; sister-in-law of James California III and his wife Mary, Carole Lewis and her husband Bob and Michelle California-Aguir and her husband Davide; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, James California.
Friends were received at Schellhaas Funeral Home, West View. A funeral mass was held in the Church of the Assumption on Friday.

Regina Powell
Regina “Jean” Krol Powell of Pittsburgh, wife of the late Paul A. Powell, died Sunday Aug. 22, 2010.
Mrs. Powell was a member of Sears Retirement Club.
She is survived by three children, Susan R. Ulrich and her husband George of Virginia Beach, VA P. Gregory Powell and his wife Deborah of Phoenix, AZ and Marian Powell of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren, Shanon Beigler, Andrew E. and Daniel A Powell; two step-grandchildren, Gretchen and Rob Ulrich; and a great-grandchild, Peyton Beigler.

Lorraine Guzowski
Lorraine A. Zaporowski, 71, of Avalon, formerly of Polish Hill and wife of the late Thomas Guzowski, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010.
She is survived by her brother, Walter Zaporowski and his wife Nancy; and her niece Karen Nieri. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph “Tiger” and Pauline Zaporowski.
There was no visitation. A blessing service was held in St. Stanislaus Cemetery Chapel on Friday. Arrangements were made by Walter J. Zalewski Funeral Home, Lawrenceville.

Sam Nicotra
Sam Nicotra, 84, Brighton Heights, husband of the late Pauline Harrison Nicotra, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010.
Mr. Nicotra was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II.
He is survived by five children, Sam Nicotra and his wife Rhea, Sandra Ross, Kathleen Mussomeli and her husband Mike, Steve Nicotra and his wife Roseann, and Bruce Nicotra and his wife Trish; his sister, Rose Stewart; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at Shellhaas Funeral Home, West View. A mass of Christian Burial was held in St, Teresa of Avila Church on Monday. Donations are suggested to Celtic Hospice and Palliative Care Services, 150 Sharberry Lane, Mars, PA 16046.

John Stephens
John Laufer “Buc” Stephens, 71, of North Park, formerly of Ben Avon Heights, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010 at Concordia at Rebecca Residence, Allison Park.
Mr. Stephens was a U.S. Army veteran, having served as a helicopter crew chief. He worked at US Airways, formerly Allegheny Airlines, for 38 years. He enjoyed sailing and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Susanne Stephens; his daughter, Brittany Hurst and her husband Steven of Allison Park; his brother, Gordon Stephens pf Brodheadsville; two-grandsons, Mitchell and Colin Hurst; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Laufer and Ruth Stephens.
A memorial service will be held in Glenshaw Valley Presbyterian Church on Friday, Sept. 3, at 4 P.M. Memorial contributions are suggested to North Area Enviromental Council, P.O. Box 71, Ingomar, PA 15217 or his church. Arrangements were made by McDonald-Aeberli Funeral Home, Mars, PA.

James Tassos
James R. Tassos of Brighton Heights died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010.
He is survived by three children, Ronnie and Jimmie Tassos and Shelly Weaver; his sister, Sandy Vincenzo and her husband Frank; four grandchildren; and his niece, Kelli Vincenzo. He was preceded in death by his mother, Blanche “Fluffy” Hollenberger.
Friends received at Rex T. Smith Funeral Home, North Side, where a blessing service was held on Monday. Burial was in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.

Joseph Savickas
Joseph J. Savickas, 87, of Avalon, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa Savickas; four children, Joella, Kathleen, Robert, Ronald and Erik Savickas; two granddaughters, Sophia and Angelina. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Antonette Savickas.
Service and burial were private. Arrangements were made by McDonald-Linn Funeral Home, Avalon.

Rev. Robert Schweitzer
Rev. Robert Schweitzer died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010.
Father Schweitzer was recently retired as pastor of St. Joseph the Worker parish in New Castle, PA.
He is survived by three siblings, Margaret Ann Goss, Al Schweitzer and Donald W. Schweitzer and his wife Sharon; eight nieces and nephews; and 11 grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Emma Schweitzer.

Friends received at his church on Sunday, with the Very Rev. Philip N. Farell, V.E., presiding, and visitation on Monday at O’Brien Funeral Home, North Side. A mass of Translation was held in Risen Lord Church on Monday evening., with the Very Rev. Robert F. Guay, V.G., as celebrant. A funeral mass wsa held in Risen Lord Church on Tuesday, with Most Rev. Bishop David A. Zubik, the celebrant. Burial was in Christ Our Redeemer Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Vincent dePaul Society.

Curtis Hyde
Curtis Vero Hyde of Tempe, AZ, formerly of Bell Acres, PA and husband of the late Gloria Holmquist Hyde, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010.
Mr. Hyde was the owner/partner of Retzer-Hyde drug store in Bellevue. He was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy.
He is survived by five children, Edward of Medford, OR, Kim of Pittsburgh, S. Richard of Colorado Springs, CO, Susan of Raleigh, NC and Bethan of Winter Springs, FL; two siblings, Jean Wenner of Pittsburgh and James Hyde of Augusta, GA; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Edna Hyde; two siblings, Keith LaSalla and Ann Fink.

Diane Heaney
Diane L. Heaney, 64, of Pittsburgh, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2010.

She is survived by her son, Michael P. Heaney of Pittsburgh; her mother, Beatrice Young of McCandless Township; three siblings, Cheryl Stuckey and Deborah Garing, both of Evans City and Edward Young of McCandless; and two grandsons, Joseph and Josh Heaney. She was preceded in death by her father, Dallas Young.

Friends were received at the Lawrence T. Miller Funeral Home, Bellevue, where services were held on Tuesday. Burial was in Mt. Royal Cemetery.

Stephen Kundrat
Stephen A. Kundrat, 91, of Brighton Heights, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010 in Vincentian Home.

He is survived by his wife, Alma E. Kundrat; two children, John S. Kundrat, M.D. and his wife Ellen Thompson, PhD. and Mary Louise Kundrat, M.D. and her husband D. Lawrence Wickerham, M.D.; and two grandsons, Matthew J. Kundrat, PhD. and Andrew L. Wickerham.

There was no visitation. A memorial mass was held in St. Peter Church, North Side, on Thursday. Donations are suggested to Vincentian Home, 111 Perrymont Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15237. Arrangements were made by O'Brien Funeral Home, North Side.

Walter Novak
Walter S. Novak, 80, of Wexford, husband of the late Martha B. Novak, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010 in Good Samaritan Hospice House.

Mr. Novak worked in the McCandless Police Department for 10 years and as chief of police for Franklin Park for a year and a half. He then worked as security chief at Chatham College. He was district manager for the PA Lottery for more than 20 years until his retirement. He was a member of Ingomar United Methodist Church, Allegheny Commandry and Chapter, past master of Lodge 716, past high priest, Bellevue Royal Arch Chapter 286, and past commander of Valley Veterans in Glenfield.

He is survived by five children, Linda N. Ferguson, Suzanne Vandevort, Janet Keyes, Walter E. Novak and David E. Novak; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and dear friend, Linda C. Smith and family.

Joseph Vrbanic
Joseph R. Vrbanic of O'Hara Township. died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010.

He is survived by two children, Adam Vrbanic and his wife Allison and Beth A. Vrbanic; his sister, Mary Herman; and a grandchild, Esme Vrbanic. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph M. and Bernadette Vrbanic.

She is survived by three siblings, Michael Leybick and his wife Lillian, Rose Engel and Jane Rubolino and her husband Don; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Mary Leybick; and her sister, Ann O'Neil.
