Vincent Joseph Sirianni, 92, formerly of Bellevue and husband of the late Maria "Mary" Menniti Sirianni, died Tuesday, July 14, 2015.
Mr. Sirianni immigrated to the USA at the age of 10. He was a Bellevue High School graduate and a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. He enjoyed creating oil paintings of people and places that were of interest to him. He played the violin and the mandolin. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theatre. He and his wife's letters to each other during that time are preserved and are part of the Heinz History Center's National Italian American Foundation/Historical Society of Western PA Italian American World War II Veteran Oral History Project. He enjoyed gardening, especially fig trees with branches brought from Italy. He worked as a lithographer and was active in the Graphic Arts International Union. He was a member of St. James Church in Sewickley, where he had been an usher for many years.
He is survived by three children, Louis Sirianni and his wife Victoria, Rosemary Sirianni and Catherine Sirianni Rees and her husband Robert; four siblings, Battista Sirianni, Nicola Sirianni and his wife Donna, Ernest Sirianni and his wife Diana and Teresa Amelio and her husband Salvatore; three grandchildren, Ana Sirianni, Julia Luthi and her husband Jacob and Bethany Rees; like-a-son, Andrew Gallo; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luigi and Rosalinda Sauro Sirianni; and his nephew, Samuel D. Menniti.
Friends were received at the Lawrence T. Miller Funeral Home, Bellevue. A Mass of Christian Burial was held in the Church of the Assumption on Saturday. Burial was in Christ Our Redeemer Mausoleum. Joseph A. Smetanka, 88, of the North Side, died Wednesday, July 15, 2015.
Mr. Smetanka was a retired captain of the City of Pittsburgh Firefighters and a member of the Catholic War Veterans #1365, as well as a member of the Slovak Club. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Hudak Smetanka; three children, Joseph W. Smetanka and his wife Cynthia, Dr. Cindy Smetanka and Ava Puccio and her husband David; his sister, Helen Klimchak; and six grandchildren, Kyle, Aaron and his wife Courtney, Jacqueline, Lauren, David and Joey. He was preceded in death by his brother, George Smetanka.
Friends were received at Thomas P. Kunsak Funeral Home, North Side. A funeral mass was held in St. Cyril of Alexandria Church on Saturday.
Amy Jean Ironside, 47, of Ohio Township, formerly of Moon, died Friday, July 17, 2015.
She is survived by her husband, David Bittner; three children, Madeline Iannamorelli of Coraopolis, Lucy Iannamorelli and Jack Iannamorelli, both of Moon Township; her parents, Ken and Valerie Mitchell Ironside of Baltimore, MD; four stepchildren, Kelly Ciafre and her husband David, Melissa Salvatore and Nicholas Bittner, all of Pittsburgh; six siblings, Susan, Nancy, Rebecca, Sarah, Benjamin and Jacob Ironside; and six step-grandchildren, Daniel Petrelli, Donnie and Derek Hainesworth, Jack, Megan and Evelyn Cafre.
Friends were received at Copeland's Sewickley Funeral Home, where services were held on Monday with Rev. Ken Ironside and Rev. Susan Ironside the officiants. Burial was private.
Edna M. Vetterly Bertram, 76, of Emsworth, wife of the late Ralph E. Bertram Sr. died Monday, July 20, 2015.
Mrs. Bertram had been a teacher's aide at Holy Family Institute.
She is survived by two sons, Ralph E. Bertram Jr. and his wife Lynn of Avalon and George L. Bertram and his wife Isabel of Connecticut; four siblings, Jack Vetterly, Howard Vetterly and his wife Gail, Clara Baehr and Alice Karlik and her husband Bill; five grandchildren, Ashley, Adam, Aaron, Justine and Christina; two great-grandchildren, Abby and J.J.; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Vetterly and Linda Vetterly; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, George, James and Harry Vetterly.
Memorial services will be held later. Memorial contributions are suggested to Caring Heights Community Care, 234 Coraopolis Road, Coraopolis, PA 15108. Arrangements were made by McDonald-Linn Funeral Home, Avalon.
Daisy J. Crawford Marlin, 99, formerly of West View and wife of the late Donald H. Marlin and George W. Crawford, died Saturday, July 18, 2015.
She is survived by three children, George Crawford and his wife Rita of Sewickley, Kathryn A. Loafman and her husband Kenneth of Plano, TX and Dean Marlin of Aspinwall; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Orion C. Pinkerton Funeral Home, Avalon. Funeral services were held in Bellevue United Presbyterian Church on Thursday. Burial was in Allegheny County Memorial Park.
