Willard Mecklenburg
Willard M. Mecklenburg, 86, of Avalon, husband of the late Barbara Gavin Mecklenburg, died Thursday, June 16, 2011.
Mr. Mecklenburg was retired from Duquesne University where he was an associate professor of journalism. He served on Avalon Council 1976-79. He was a member of Avalon-Bellevue Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his son, Robert R. Mecklenburg and his wife Laura J. of Hopewell Township; his sister, Shirlee Spain and her husband Clark of Kalispell, MT; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Myron Mecklenburg; and two brothers, Howard Mecklenburg and his wife Glenda Mae and Bruce Mecklenburg and his wife Gerrie.
Friends were received at McDonald-Linn Funeral Home, Avalon. A memorial service was held in Greenstone United Methodist Church in Avalon on Tuesday. Memorial contributions are suggested to Alzheimer's Association.

Valerie Knox
Valerie O. Knox, 85, of Emsworth, wife of the late James W. Knox, died Tuesday, June 14, 2011.
Mrs. Knox studied the arts and worked as a graphic artist in her native Berlin, Germany, and also was a restaurant worker for the Royal German Air Corps. She then worked as a nanny in Dublin, Ireland. She immigrated to the United States in 1953 and married. She was active in political campaigns with her husband, and they also supported the Gaelic Arts Society of Pittsburgh and the Nationality Rooms Council at the University of Pittsburgh. She was a longtime member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Emsworth, and actively participated in the USA LST Association, the Irish Room Committee at the University of Pittsburgh, and was an organizer and hostess for her husband's LST-491-Double Trouble crew reunions.
She is survived by three children, Jennie Lynn Knox of Emsworth, Christopher Knox and his wife Amy of Ohio Township and Ronald James Knox of Davenport, CA; six grandchildren, Bethenna Emlyn Boger, Ezra Charles Knox, Shannon Lynn Knox, Kelsey Ann Knox, Emily Reid Knox and Aileen Madison Knox; her sister-in-law, Jennie Marie Knox Lewis; and her godson, Donald Knox Lewis. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Elijah Brooklyn Knox.
There was no visitation. A memorial service will be held in St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Emsworth on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011 at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to Animal Friends, Caryl Gates Gluck Resource Center, 562 Camp Horne Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15237 or Bethany Hospice, Six Parkway Center, Suite 100, 875 Greentree Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15220.

Olga Gottron
Olga Kapetanovich Gottron, 91, of Reserve Township, wife of the late Joseph H. "Jiggs" Gottron, died Saturday, June 18, 2011.
She is survived by two children, Janet L. Kaminski and her husband Robert of Hampton Township and Joseph D. Gottron and his wife Barbara of Ben Avon Heights; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three siblings, Diane "Dunca," Steve and Dan Kapetanovich.
Services were private. Memorial contributions are suggested to Alzheimer's Association, 1100 Liberty Ave., Suite E-201, Pittsburgh, PA 15222. Arrangements were made by Hughes Funeral Home, Troy Hill.

Virginia Cortese
Virginia E. Orchowski Cortese, wife of the late Anthony R. Cortese, died Monday, June 20, 2011.
She is survived by three siblings, Edmund Orchowski, Harry Orchowski and his wife Kay and Barbara Schram and her husband Richard. She was preceded in death by seven siblings, Frank Orchowski, Frances Koziatek, Evelyn Kilchenstein, Rita Ernst, Arthur Orchowski, Ernestine "Dolly" Lakomy and John Orchowski.
Friends were received at Thomas P. Kunsak Funeral Home, North Side. A funeral mass was held in Risen Lord Church on Wednesday. Contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association, 777 Penn Center Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15235.
