James M. "Jimmy" McCarthy, 83, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2015.
Mr. McCarthy was born in Limerick, Ireland and moved to New York to work on a farm. He was a horse jockey in Ireland and England and rode a number of winners, notably in the Curragh with Martin Quirke and Tom Costelloe in Clare, and he rode the most famous Montcapitane, sire to the legendary Gold Cup winner Captain Christie in 1977. When he moved to Pittsburgh, he worked on Barberry Farms in Sewickley.
He is survived by dear friends, Bob, Lisa, Lauren and Kevin Simpson of Kilbuck; and nieces and nephews in Dublin, Ireland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Josephine McCarthy.
There was no visitation. A memorial mass was held in St. Mary Church in Glenfield on Saturday. Memorial donations are suggested to Family Hospice and Palliative Care, 50 Moffett St., Pittsburgh, PA 15234. Arrangements were made by Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Claysville, PA.
June A. Gandet McCormick, 97, of Masonic Village at Sewickley, formerly of Emsworth and Ben Avon and wife of the late Richard H. McCormick, died Monday, Nov. 9, 2015.
Mrs. McCormick was a 1936 graduate of Perry High School and a 1939 graduate of Suburban General Hospital School of Nursing. She was an active member of the Women's Club of Ben Avon and Emsworth United Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and served as a deacon and elder. She was active in Scouting from Brownies to senior scouting as a troop leader.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda J. McCormick and her husband Robert Taylor of Freedom, PA and Joann C. McCormick of Houston,TX; her sister, Joann Bingle and her husband William; three grandchildren, Richard H. Langell, William R. Langell Jr. and Heidi Odom and her husband Rob; two great-grandchildren, 2nd Lt. Tyler Odom and Jenna Odom; nieces and nephews; and dear friends, Dr. and Mrs. V. Murthy. She was preceded in death by two children, Marjorie A. Langell and Sgt. Richard H. McCormick Jr.; and her parents, John and Christine Henning Gandet.

Alice "Pat" Sligo Plesh, 85, of Ambridge, wife of the late John P. Plesh, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015.
Mrs. Plesh had been recording secretary of St. Nicholas Lodge 304, secretary of Ansambl Sveti Nikola, managed the Croatian Club and was a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union of America.
She is survived by three children, Patricia DeMartino and her husband Brian, Pamela Weigand and her husband Bill, and Paul Plesh; her sister, Wilma Sligo Jones; six grandchildren, John Kyle, Chelsea, Sean and Russell DeMartino, Erin Plesh Thaler and Taylor Plesh; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two siblings, David Sligo and Audrey Barranti.
Friends were received at the Orion C. Pinkerton Funeral Home, Avalon. A Mass of Christian Burial was held in Sacred Heart Church in Emsworth on Saturday. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Western PA Alzheimer's Association.
Mary Ann Fortunes
Mary Ann Heim Fortunes of New Hope Assisted Living in Avalon, formerly of Ross Township and wife of the late Stephen Fortunes, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015.
Mrs. Fortunes was a retired circuit layout engineer at Bell Telephone Co. Along with her husband, she was co-owner of Original Fortunes Coffee in the Strip District of Pittsburgh.
She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Walker; two nieces, Carol Semich and her husband Frank and Lori Binz and her husband Jerry; her grandniece, Jennifer Earnest and her husband Mark; and six great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews, Regan, Lily, Alexandra, Austin, Ryan and Luke. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Mary Heim; her sister, Margaret Person; and her grandnephew, Brian Vickers and his wife Lisa.
Friends were received at the Lawrence T. Miller Funeral Home, Bellevue. Funeral services were held in the chapel of Christ Our Redeemer Cemetery on Monday.
Mary Adeline Neely Holthaus, 92, formerly of North Hills and Ben Avon Heights and wife of the late William Herman Holthaus, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015 in Masonic Village of Sewickley.
Mrs. Holthaus was a Peabody High School graduate. She had been a charter member of Christ Lutheran Church in Ross Township and then a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Perrysville. She coached her daughter's softball team and helped organize another daughter's senior prom and supported her daughters and grandchildren's activities. She enjoyed collecting Hummels, sewing and shopping up and down the East Coast.
She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Jean Hrivnak and her husband Martin of Harrisburg, PA and Carol Ann Bickert and her husband Glenn of Lake Forest, CA; four grandchildren, Marta Penman and her husband Rick of Carlsbad, CA, Monika Guentert and her husband Phil of San Jose, CA, Martin Hrivnak and his wife Frances of Washington, DC and Matthew Hrivnak and his wife Amanda of Cranston, RI; six great-grandchildren; two nephews, Robert and Mark Neely and their families; and dear friend, Leland Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert B. Sr. and Elizabeth Campbell Neely; her brother, Robert B. Neely Jr.; and four pets, Blackie, Princess, Laddie and Honey Bun.
There was no visitation and services were private. Burial was in Mt. Royal Cemetery.
Florence M. Loebig McMurray, wife of the late James J. McMurray, died Friday, Nov. 13, 2015.
She is survived by five children, Marianne Rich and her husband Mark, Marjorie Mitchell, Billy McMurray and his wife Debbie, Jack McMurray and his wife Ruth and Larry McMurray and his wife Diane; her brother, John Loebig; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by seven siblings; and her son-in-law, Michael Mitchell.
Friends were received at Thomas P. Kunsak Funeral Home, North Side. A funeral mass was held in St. Cyril of Alexandria Church on Monday.
Phil F. Deringer, 77, of Ohio Township, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Deringer; three children, Stephanie Kurtz, Vicky Deringer and Philip Deringer and his wife Julie; four siblings, Joseph Deringer, Clifford Deringer, Georgenne Gloeckner and Kevin Deringer; and five grandchildren, Daniel Kurtz, Sam Kurtz, Jessica Myers, Aiden Deringer and Jackson Deringer.

James J. "Jim" "Goo" McKee, 67, of Ben Avon, formerly of Moon Township., died Monday, Nov. 16, 2015.
Mr. McKee was a Moon Area High School graduate. He served more than 40 years with the Carpenter's District Council #142.
He is survived by two children, Jennifer and Ned McKee; three siblings, Kevin McKee and his wife Pamela of Bulgar, PA, Keith McKee and Pattie Trkula and her husband Thomas of Harrisburg; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, James J. and Mildred Coughlin McKee; two siblings, Kathleen Ayers and William "Bo" McKee; and his sister-in-law, Colleen McKee.
