More than a gym

Calling Pure Fitness a gym is a bit of an understatement.

Yes, it has lots of exercise equipment for both cardio and strength work-outs. It has classes that include spinning, yoga, pilates, Zumba and TurboKick.

It even has shower facilities and personal trainers, plus massage and sauna offered.

But Pure Fitness has been designed by owner Kim Gregory to offer women a friendly, supportive community that just so happens to be a place where they can take care of themselves.

"It's a place for intelligent, strong, independent women who care about their health," says Kim.

To that end, Pure Fitness offers child care and special events that include women's health screenings, CPR and First Aid training, and a self-defense class will be held in April. It offers tanning beds and spray tanning. And it brings together its members for family events for the holidays, and charitable efforts that recently have benefitted the Alzheimers Association and the homeless.

Kim, who by day is a law librarian for a downtown law firm, understands the extreme benefits of being fit. A certified spin instructor and a longtime hiker, she recently ran a half-marathon and completed an 18-mile hike along the Rachel Carson Trail. She knows that fitness does more than strengthen the body, as it improves mood and relieves stress. Bring those benefits together with a supportive community of women, and, ultimately, "You have a place that’s more than just fitness," she says.

Pure Fitness accommodates women with all levels of ability and experience, and offers private as well as group classes. Membership packages are available, and include all classes, or women can pay for individual work-outs and classes. The center, located at 153 Perry Hwy. in West View -- right at the end of Bellevue Road -- is open from 5:30 a.m. until 9:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
