Mayoral scholarship

AmySue Lillie will be returning the money she receives as mayor of Emsworth Borough.

At the March 14 council meeting, Lillie announced she has established the “Dare to Dream”scholarship, which will award $500 as a one-time disbursement to an Emsworth graduating senior. The money must be used for furthering skills and talents at a trade school, a technical school, a professional school or an institution of higher learning. The scholarship will be offered twice a year.

Applicants are to submit a 200-word minimum response to the prompt, “How has growing up in Emsworth made a difference in your life and how does it correlate to your desire to pursue further skills and knowledge?” The applications should be submitted to the mayor at the borough building or to counselor Nicole Levis at Avonworth High School and must be postmarked by May 1, 2018.

When explaining the scholarship, Lillie said, “I receive taxpayer money, and I want to donate it back to the community.” She added that any money she receives above the $1,000 used in the scholarship, she will donate to the Emsworth Volunteer Fire Company.
