No Bar

I recently attended a public hearing in Avalon on Aug. 2, 2010 for the request of a liquor license to be transferred into Avalon. Our council approved this at a 5 to 3 vote.

This business will be an upscale cigar and sports bar located at 643 California Ave. Quite honestly, I have never heard of an upscale bar-- a bar is a bar. This business will be located within 300 feet of a school, playground, church and the Avalon borough hall.

There were several citizens that expressed their concerns regarding the possibility of this license ending up in the borough. We were told there would be certain rules for the patrons along with a dress code and operating hours of the establishment. I am concerned about the future. Once a liquor license is obtained I don't think the owner is required to abide by these rules.

I feel Avalon has other issues to deal with right now and one of them is not a new bar that will not bring any revenue into our borough. Hopefully the PLCB will make the right decision and not grant permission for the transfer of this liquor license into Avalon. I realize we need to improve our business district, but not with a bar.
