Lady ’Lopes win

It was a down-to-the-wire game for the Avonworth girls’ basketball team when they hosted Mohawk in their home-opener this past Monday. The Lady ‘Lopes led through most of the contest and managed to hang on to defeat the Warriors in section play 46-43.

"It was a tough fought game defensively both ways and there were a lot of swings in the game," said 'Lopes coach Mark D'Alessandris.

Hayden Robinson carried the Antelope offense with eight points early on, but a basket by Alexa Davis allowed Avonworth to go into the locker room at the half leading 22-19.

Avonworth was able to stretch their lead to five points twice in the third quarter, but Mohawk was able to narrow the gap.

A put-back basket by Kat Goetz and a pair of free throws by Hayden Robinson had the Lady ‘Lopes ahead 31-26 with 2:20 left in the period, but the Warriors closed with a 7-2 run that put the teams in a 33-33 tie heading into the fourth quarter.

Mohawk hit a shot from behind the arc to take the lead, but a couple of free throws by Goetz and Lexi Mankey and a coast-to-coast basket by Goetz put Avonworth back in front 37-36. Goetz scored eight points in the fourth quarter, where the Lady ‘Lopes connected on 11-19 from the free throw line on their way to the 46-43 victory.

Goetz finished with 13 points followed by Hayden Robinson with 11.

"We're still growing as a team," said D'Allesandris. "It's only our fourth game, and we have a lot to accomplish."

Avonworth began section play on the road last Thursday when they cruised to a 69-46 victory over Beaver Falls. The Lady ‘Lopes held the upper hand in all four quarters and were led by Hayden Robinson with 30 points. Sophomore Harris Robinson finished with 14 points followed by Goetz with 13 points.

Avonworth (2-0, 3-1) moved into Section 1 (3A) this year, as part of the WPIAL section realignment. The other members include Beaver, Neshannock, Ellwood City, Riverside and Freedom.
