Lady ’Lopes stay on top in section

The Avonworth girls’ softball team kept their unbeaten streak intact after blanking Hopewell in section play at home this past Wednesday 10-0.

The Lady ‘Lopes (13-0, 6-0) padded their lead in 3A Section 2 and remained the top-ranked team in the 3A classification as they began the second half of their regular season schedule.

Sarah Helffrich pitched a complete game, surrendering just five hits, and Abby Stanley highlighted the Lady ‘Lope offense with 3-4 at bat while driving in two runs.

Pitcher Maya Kozup picked up the win on the mound, surrendering just one earned run when Avonworth defeated North Catholic in section play this past Tuesday 7-6.

Natalie Marshall went 1-3 from the plate, driving in two runs. Sarah Helffrich was 3-4 batting with an RBI, and Domi Raught had a double with two RBIs.

Wednesday, April 11, Avonworth took sole possession of first place in 3A Section 2 when they traveled to Beaver and earned a 6-2 victory.

Helffrich pitched a complete game, surrendering two runs on five hits while striking out three in the win. Meghan Fissore, Raught and Cat Barie each drove in a run with timely hits

Avonworth hosted West Allegheny this past Saturday in a non-section contest and won convincingly, 16-5.

Kozup picked up the win on the mound and went 3-4 from the plate including four RBIs. Her second home run was a walk-off two-run blast that ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
