In a non-section contest last Friday, the Avonworth girls basketball team hosted Sewickley Academy and rolled to a 58-32 win.
Hayden Robinson had a superb night all around, finishing with 22 points along with 12 rebounds.
In the first quarter sisters Hayden and Hunter Robinson combined for 10 points, and freshman Lexi Mankey scored four points and sophomore Alexa Davis scored from underneath at the buzzer to give the Lady ‘Lopes an early 16-10 lead.
Avonworth’s best effort offensively came in the second quarter, where Hayden Robinson’s nine points paced the Antelopes’ offense. Lily Tedesco scored in the lane and knocked down a shot from the left corner to finish a 7-2 run that had the ‘Lopes ahead 23-12 approximately three minutes into the period. The Panthers trimmed the lead to six points but Hunter Robinson’s baseline jumper sent Avonworth on a 12-3 run through the remainder of the quarter.
The run included six points by Hayden Robinson, a pair of free throws by Mankey and a basket by Anna Joyce at the end to give Avonworth a 35-20 halftime lead.
Avonworth continued to build on their lead in the third quarter, where Tedesco’s four points led the Antelopes on offense. Hunter Robinson banked in a three-pointer from the top of the circle to end the period with the ‘Lopes on top 46-26.
Avonworth obtained the same point advantage of 11-6 in the fourth quarter to secure their 58-32 win.
Following Hayden Robinson’s 22 points were Hunter Robinson and Tedesco each with eight points, Mankey with six and Joyce with five points.
The Lady ‘Lopes returned to section play this past Monday and had no problem handling Steel Valley as they rolled to a 60-43 win.
Avonworth put the game away early, forcing 11 turnovers by the Lady Ironmen in the first quarter on their way to a 27-5 lead.
Hayden Robinson led all scorers with 19 points with 13 of those coming in the opening quarter. Joyce scored 14 points that including four baskets from three-point range. Hunter Robinson added 11 points to the offense, followed by Nicole Costa with six and Tedesco and Mankey each with five points.
