Keeping in touch over the summer...

A good, old-fashioned egg toss was just one of the activities at a picnic hosted by the Northgate High School National Honor Society Tuesday for refugee children who live in the area. The NHS kids teamed up with the youth group from Bellevue Christian Church, one of a number of area churches that help people who have resettled in this little part of the United States.

Most of the children who attended the picnic were refugees from Bhutan, a small country just below China. Their families had fled to neighboring Nepal to escape ethnic persecution, and from there were moved from crowded refugee camps to countries around the world, part of a United Nations program.

This is the second outing sponsored by Northgate’s NHS, the first being a game night at Bellevue Presbyterian Church. This week’s picnic, however, was designed specifically to keep the children from becoming isolated during the summer vacation months when they are not in school.
