Iovino wins 37th senate seat

Democrat Pam Iovino will soon take a seat in the Pennsylvania Senate after defeating Republican D. Raja in a special election held Tuesday.

The 37th District seat was left vacant when incumbent Republican Guy Reschenthaler won a seat in the U.S. Congress in the general election. Reschenthaler himself won a special election to take over the 37th state seat when Democrat Matt Smith resigned to take a job in the private sector.

In the North Boroughs arm of the 37th District, the vote totals for the two candidates were quite close, with a voter turnout of less than 30 percent. Iovino won Emsworth (186-153) and Ohio Township (612-583), while Raja took Ben Avon Heights (76-65) and Kilbuck Township (80-79) by smaller margins.

Iovino will barely make it to Harrisburg before she has to run for re-election in 2020.
