Girls lose Mohawk rematch

By JIM RUMBLE

After defeating Mohawk in a down to the wire section contest at home last month, the Avonworth girls’ basketball team could have expected to face a similar encounter when they played the Warriors away this past Monday.

Unfortunately for the Lady ‘Lopes, they came out flat while the home team was firing on all cylinders as Mohawk won in a rout, 56-32.

Avonworth turned the ball over on their first four possessions to start the first quarter, and that would help put them behind early 12-1. Lexi Mankey put an end to the offensive surge by the Warriors, converting on a pair of free throws and then knocking down a shot from long range to put the score at 12-6. Kat Goetz scored in the lane and Hayden Robinson made her second of two free throws, but Mohawk closed with a 7-3 run and made 7-9 from the floor including three threes in the period to lead 19-9.

Avonworth struggled to find themselves on offense in the second quarter, where they shot a meager 2-15 from the floor. Harris Robinson began the quarter with a basket in transition, and Alexa Davis knocked down a shot with 1:02 left in the period as Mohawk held a 14-4 point advantage to lead 33-13 at the half.

A basket each by Hayden Robinson and Goetz came early in the third quarter, and Mankey followed with a three-ball from the top of the circle and a basket in transition as the 'Lopes put together a 9-2 run to cut their deficit to 35-22.

Harris Robinson made one of two free throws after being fouled on a drive to the hoop, but the Warriors used a 7-0 run to finish out the quarter and lead 42-23. Hayden Robinson scored on a put-back to begin the fourth quarter, but that was as close as Avonworth would get to the lead.

The Lady ‘Lopes got a three-pointer by Alexia Heinold and Harris Robinson converted a three point play, but Avonworth was out-pointed 14-9 to fall 56-32.

Mankey led Avonworth scorers with 10 points, followed by Hayden Robinson with seven points and Harris Robinson with six points.

The loss by the Lady ‘Lopes broke a three-game win streak that concluded with a 50-25 win at home against Beaver Falls on Thursday, Jan. 17. In that game, the 'Lopes led by seven points at the half but went on to out-score the Tigers 30-10 in the second half on their way to the win.

Hayden Robinson recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Harris Robinson finished with 12 points and Goetz with 10 points.

Avonworth (7-2, 9-5) is tied for second place in the section.
