Girl Scouts get Silver Award

Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania has presented Girl Scout Silver Awards to Hadley Holcomb, Chintha Kathiresan, Julia Marn and Jessie Mellon.

According to GSWP, “This award recognizes young women who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable Take Action projects that address important community needs. Projects require up to 50 hours of work and a mentor in their area of project interest. Each must use her strength, talent, and skills and put her plan into action to earn the Silver Award while taking a leadership role.

Projects for each of the Scouts were as follows: Holcomb used her love of books to build, install and register a “Little Free Library” on Church Avenue in Ben Avon; Kathiresan wrote and published a curriculum for preschoolers at her temple, which is now being used around Allegheny County; Marn collected books and took them to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh; Mellon produced a cookbook for students with disabilities.

Each of these young women attends Avonworth High School and they are members of Girl Scout Troop #50798. Troop leaders are Brenda Mellon and Melanie Holcomb.
