Fire destroys Avalon home

An Avalon family’s home was destroyed in a fire in the 800 block of Florence Avenue last Friday morning.

Avalon Police were the first to arrive at the scene about 9 a.m. Police Chief Tom Kokoski said that everyone had gotten out of the house that was on fire, but that he went to the neighboring homes to make sure residents were out in case the fire spread, kicking in the door at one house to be sure no one was inside.

Fire Chief Chuck Berie said that flames were coming out the right side of the house when firefighters arrived. “It had a head start on us,” he said.

The fire is believed to have started on the second floor of the house, which, he said, sustained heavy damage, as did the third floor.

Firefighters faced the same situation as they had in Bellevue the week before, when fire spread through the walls and ceilings of a duplex on South Bryant Avenue. Berie said that it took some three-and-a-half hours to get the fire under control and make sure it did not spread to the adjacent homes.

A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help the family. That page says that eight children live in the home, although only four and their mother were at home, and sleeping, at the time the fire broke out. Donations of clothing and funds are being sought.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Allegheny County Fire Marshal.
