Students in the Northgate School District may soon be exposed to the benefits of having horses provide some of their education.

Representatives of Soergel’s Orchardview Stables in Wexford spoke with officials during Monday’s school board meeting, describing their existing program that allows students to interact with horses as both education and therapy.

Tessa Maxwell said that the stables offer horseback riding as a student field trip, and also have certified instructors and therapists who run programs for children with various physical, intellectual and emotional disabilities.

Superintendent Caroline Johns said that administrators recently visited the stables, and she recommended Northgate first offer a field trip for one high school class, then possibly offer the therapeutic portion of the program to some elementary school students.
