The Community Theatre Players will stage the Orson Welles classic radio drama, "The War of the Worlds," at the Community Presbyterian Church of Ben Avon, Church Avenue.

In his debut as a director, Gary Weiss, also a performer in the show, said, "As we are putting this on the week before Halloween, we thought this would be a great treat for people to see and hear. We are doing it like the old time radio show, and the audience will see the actors take on different roles as they read right into the microphones. But one of the biggest stars of the show will be the sound effects man, who will do the sound effects on stage, just as it was done in old-time radio."

Weiss said that the theater group wanted to put on an autumn production that "…was simpler in design than our typical show -- one that would challenge our actors while entertaining our audience. We tossed around the idea of doing a reading, but eventually thought that there would not be enough visual stimulation to hold the viewers. I started to think about old time radio shows that I have enjoyed through the years. I came across 'The War of the Worlds' script that Howard Koch wrote for Orson Welles’ Mercury Theatre on the Air and was excited to find out that the rights were available."

The show will be staged on Friday, Oct. 22, and Saturday, Oct. 23, at 8 p.m. Admission is $5. No reservations are necessary.
