College credit

At Monday night's meeting, the Avonworth School Board approved motions that will will allow Avonworth High School students, beginning in the 2018-19 school year, the opportunity to take a wide variety of “College in High School” classes.

The school board approved removing the following courses from the Avonworth course book and replacing the traditional classes with courses from several local institutions of higher learning.

Removed were: AP Computer Science, Speech, Environmental Science of Pennsylvania, Problems of Democracy, and Introduction to Computer Programming (which was a College in High School course offered by the University of Pittsburgh.)

Replacing the deleted courses in the Avonworth course book are: Introduction to Computer Science (CMU), for grades 9-12; Modern Public Speaking (SPCH 101) (College in High School, LaRoche), for grades 10-12; Race, Class & Gender: Introduction to Sociology (SOCL 1021) (College in High School, LaRoche), for grades 10-12; Introduction to Psychology (PSY 0010) College in High School, LaRoche), for grades 10-12; Environmental Science (College in High School, Robert Morris University), for grades 10-12; Anatomy & Physiology (College in High School, Carlow University), for grades 10-12; Intermediate Programming Using Java (CS 0401) (College in High School, University of Pittsburgh), for grades 10-12; and American Politics (PS 0200) (College in High School, University of Pittsburgh), for grades 10-12.
