Club approved

Avonworth high school has a new club. The Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) Club was unanimously approved by the school board at the April 18 meeting.

At the April 3 workshop session, numerous visitors’ comments – both for and against the proposed club – lasted nearly two hours. This week, similar comments, but overwhelmingly “for,” were voiced for an hour.

In explaining how the school board did not possess the authority to decide which clubs could exist and which could not, district solicitor William Andrews, board president David Oberdick and superintendent Tom Ralston presented detailed information concerning previous litigation on school-located clubs, freedom of speech, and other Constitutional issues including equal access. Thus, the district could choose to have no clubs or the district could choose to allow all clubs for which there was a strong student interest and a sponsor.

High school counselor Dave Como will be the club’s sponsor.

Board member Eric Templin was absent.
