Andrea Weinzierl of Ohio Township enjoyed her June 28 debut in the Broadway spotlight at the Marquis Theater in New York City so much that she promises to be back as soon as possible. Being named this year's outstanding musical actress in Pittsburgh's Kelly Awards in May earned Andrea a spot in the national competition. Following a week of rehearsing with professional directors at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Andrea, along with 41 other aspiring stars and starlets from across the nation, sang and danced through a three -hour production that showcased the talents of each performer.
"This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with Broadway professionals has validated that with constant training, persistence, talent and luck, one can have a successful career in entertainment," Andrea said.
Deborah Frauenholz, who directed Avonworth High School's production of "Mame," in which Andrea played the title role, expressed her pride in Andrea's achievements. "How exhilarating and gratifying it was to watch Andrea the moment she took the stage on Broadway a consummate actress--her presence captivating, her voice astounding, her performance stunning."
The training and performing experience were priceless and the stakes were high: scholarships to NYU for one actor and one actress selected by a panel of judges. While she did not repeat her "best-of-the-best" title as she did in Pittsburgh, Andrea will attend Point Park University as a scholarship student majoring in musical theater "…with hopes to return to the Broadway stage someday soon!"
