Big numbers

Sept. 11 varsity football recap

Both local varsity football teams took to the road Friday night, where they ended up in some high-scoring games.

The numbers worked in favor of the Avonworth Antelopes, who brought home a 34-19 win over Neshannock. Antelope stand-out Jimmy Zubik scored three touchdowns and pulled down an interception, while teammmate Eddie Kurtz returned a fumble recovery for another touchdown. Quarterback Tom Turnbull added another TD to the scoreboard. Defensively, Ryan Schmid and Andrew Niklaus had interceptions for the 'Lopes.

Northgate's split personality on the field once again was evident. The Flames had the game against Steel Valley tied at 7 in the first half before falling apart so completely that the mercy rule was put into effect halfway through the third quarter. Despite the 47-19 loss, senior Joe Ellis rushed for 151 yards on 12 carries and scored two touchdowns for the Flames. Pat Carr slipped over the goal line for the third Northgate TD of the game. Senior Mark Wilson picked up an interception in the first quarter.
