Ben Avon paving

Ben Avon is planning an ambitious street-paving schedule in the coming months, but how much actually gets done depends both on the bids for the work and on the utility companies. Ken Opipery told council at its meeting Tuesday that the borough will be advertising for the work, with bids to be opened April 11.

Topping the list of streets set for repair are Brighton Road from Breading to Route 65; Courtney Way from Church to Brighton; lower Dalzell from Church to Brighton; and Dickson from Woodland to Route 65, among numerous others. "It's an extensive list and they may not all get done," Opipery said. The borough would like any work by the utility companies to be completed before road repairs commence, but the utilities' schedules aren't known yet.

Opipery also said the sewers need to be inspected before any paving can take place. He said Gateway Engineers solicited bids, and State Pipe, which has done a lot of work for Ben Avon, came in low at $19,975. The high bid was $29,000. Council voted unanimously to accept State Pipe's bid. Megan Dolan was absent.
