Bad neighbors

Residents of both Clive Street and McKinley Terrace in Avalon asked Avalon Council for help at Tuesday's council meeting, citing poorly maintained properties on both streets.

Residents reported overgrown vegetation, garbage and pests such as insects and raccoons. It was reported that one resident of Clive Street is actually shooting, skinning and eating squirrels from his yard.

Borough manager Lorraine Makatura said that the borough was aware of the properties, and in some cases were dealing with deceased owners that left property ownership and responsibility in limbo. Residents said other properties were owned by absentee landlords.

Council president Josh Klicker said that the borough would follow up on the problem properties, although he cautioned residents that it was a slow process and the borough's powers were limited.
