Competing in their 17th consecutive season of the WPIAL playoffs, the Avonworth girls’ volleyball team advanced to the semifinals after defeating Neshannock 3-1 in a quarterfinal game played at North Catholic on Tuesday.

“It was a hard fought match against a good team,” said coach Doug Vandervort.

The Lady ‘Lopes fell behind, dropping the first set 19-25, but bounced back to win the next three sets 25-21, 25-13 and 25-21 and win the match.

Makenna Gavin led Avonworth with 11 kills, followed by Emily Ferketic with 9, Erin Williams with 6, Abby Crilley 5, Olivia Scrabis 4 and Marion Haney 1.

Vandervort noted that ‘Lopes setter Crilley had an outstanding match and also lauded the play of Kat Kosko, Ava Kelly and Hanna Banks.

Avonworth defeated South Park 3-1 in a first round match to begin the playoffs back on Oct. 26.

The #3 ranked Lady ‘Lopes were scheduled to play the #2 ranked Beaver Bobcats in the semi-finals last night at North Catholic. A win there would send the Lady ‘Lopes back to the courts on Saturday for the championship. Regardless of how these two games turn out, the girls begin state competition next Tuesday.
