Following a post-season 2-0 win against Bishop Canevin and a 4-3 upset of the Sewickley Academy Panthers, Avonworth's boys' soccer team has advanced to a WPIAL finals match-up that will be played against Seton-La Salle, with kick-off at noon tomorrow at Highmark Stadium, located on West Station Square Drive in Pittsburgh.
The victory over the Sewickley team, with a history of wins that include being state runner-up last year and WPIAL champs and state champs in 2013, came with a formidable fight.
Following 110 minutes of play that had gone into double-overtime, the score stood at 1-1, with Avonworth's goal coming from junior Patrick Cronin
The game then went into the penalty kick (PK) phase of play, with Avonworth scoring four goals to Sewickley's three. The PK goals came from seniors Johnny Oddo and Cole Pappas and freshmen Owen North and Jason Novosel.
Assistant coach Jim Pappas sums up the team's success: "It's a team that plays for each other, and that comes from our seniors' leadership."
