Avonworth girls have ups and downs

The Avonworth girls’ basketball team snapped a five-game winless streak with a come-from-behind win when they traveled to Sto-Rox on Dec. 22.

The Lady ‘Lopes trailed 20-12 at halftime, but a 13-2 point advantage in the third quarter helped propel the team to a 32-30 victory and their first section victory on the season.

"We have a tendency to play down to competition, but we were able to overcome that," said 'Lopes coach Toni Roscoe.

Katie Gould led Avonworth's offense with 11 points.

The Lady ‘Lopes made it back-to-back wins for the first time this season when they defeated West Greene on Dec. 29 in the opening game of the Bentworth tournament, 41-19.

“We're starting to click on offense and we're heading in the right direction in terms of where we need to be," said Roscoe.

Gould led all scorers with 16 points, followed by Morgan Rader with six, Erin Welsh and Lily Tedesco with five points each, Nicole Costa with four, Anna Joyce with three and Sarah Ward with two points.

Avonworth played tournament host Bentworth the following night, but fell in the championship game 43-36.

The ‘Lopes trailed throughout but managed to cut their deficit to four points in the fourth quarter.

According to Roscoe, the team missed some shots from the field as well as from the free throw line, and that was key in the outcome of the game.

Gould had another huge night offensively, leading the Avonworth offense with 17 points, followed by Tedesco with 14, Costa with four and Ward with one point.

With the holidays in the rear view mirror, the Lady ‘Lopes returned to section play this past Monday when they hosted section leader OLSH and were defeated 64-25.

Roscoe felt that her team stood a good chance of stealing a win until turn-overs and fouls became huge factors.

“We had a few runs but they [OLSH] took advantage of their opportunities.”

In the first quarter, a basket by Gould had the ‘Lopes trailing 3-2 early on, but a free throw by Costa would be the rest of the offense through the remainder of the quarter as Avonworth trailed 15-3.

The Lady ‘Lopes trailed 17-3 but followed with an 8-2 run, with Gould knocking down two free throws and hitting on a pull-up jumper while Bethany Kujawinski scored on a drive and then banked in a 17- footer to cut the ‘Lopes’ deficit to 19-11 with 2:15 left in the quarter.

The Chargers closed with a 9-0 run to lead 28-11 at the half.

A three-pointer by Joyce in the third quarter sparked a 7-0 run that included a basket off the left point by Ward and a bank shot by Costa for Avonworth, but OLSH again closed the quarter strong to lead 43-21.

The Chargers’ best quarter offensively came in the fourth quarter, where the Lady ‘Lopes were outscored 21-4 to put the final score at 64-25.

Gould led the Avonworth offense with 10 points, followed by Kujawinski with six, Joyce and Costa each with three, Ward with two and Tedesco with one point.
