Police are investigating whether the apparent suicide of an Avalon man on Nov. 24 is connected to an earlier shooting in Robinson Township.

The man shot in a motel on Steubenville Pike may have been related to Charles Richard, 32, of Delp Street in Avalon, who was found in a garage in Harris Alley. Police say he died of a gunshot that appeared to have been self-inflicted.

In other news from Avalon Police, a laptop computer was reported stolen during the burglary of a Hemlock Street residence, reported Nov. 23.

Police were called on Nov. 23 when employees of the Red, White and Blue thrift store on Ohio River Boulevard found a loaded handgun on a shelf in the rear of the store. The weapon apparently belonged to a retired Tennessee police officer who had set it aside while trying on clothes.

Someone spray-painted graffiti on several California Avenue buildings. The silver paint was found not only on two apartment buildings and the elementary school, but on a vehicle that had been parked at the corner of California and North Chestnut.

Norman Carrigan Jr., 27, of the Avalon Motel, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and public intoxication after police found him yelling in the street at the intersection of Orchard and South Ohio on Nov. 24.

Jack Whiteside, 42, of Pittsburgh 15224 was charged with driving under the influence on Nov. 24.

Also on Nov. 24, Paul Spadafora, 36, of Ben Avon, was charged with DUI on California Avenue.

Donald Ostrow, 55, of Taylor Avenue, faces the same charge after a traffic stop on Orchard Avenue on Nov. 30.
