Showing no ill effects from the previous week's tough loss, the Avonworth Antelopes football team got back on track when they hosted New Brighton in non- conference play last Friday.

Quarterback Derek Johncour completed 22-28 passes for 259 yards and four touchdowns as the 'Lopes manhandled the Lions 35-7.

"It was a good win tonight," said coach Duke Johncour. "We're a very good football team and we need to keep the focus."

All of Avonworth's points came in the first half, which led to the second half being played with the mercy rule in effect.

The 'Lopes overcame a turn-over in the early stages of the opening quarter when they marched 58 yards in four plays for a touchdown. Johncour had completions of 16 yards to Ethan Syam, 12 yards to Drew Harper and consummated the drive with a 24- yard touchdown pass to Turner Grau. Jason Novosel followed with the extra point kick, and Avonworth led 7-0 with 6:19 remaining in the first quarter.

Avonworth mixed it up on offense when the next drive began from their 16 yard line, but the highlight was a 28-yard pass from Johncour to Harper that put the ball on the Lions’ 20. Nick Weiser ran for nine yards to set up Johncour's 11-yard pass to Jake Horigan, who reached inside the left front pylon for the score. Novosel's kick made it 14-0 Avonworth with 1:52 left in the first quarter.

New Brighton moved inside the Antelopes’ 30 yard line on their next possession, but a tackle by Weiser that resulted in a seven-yard loss and a sack by Trevor Faulkner for a 12-yard loss forced a fourth down punt by the Lions.

Avonworth moved 70 yards in five plays to add to their lead. Jax Miller kept the drive going with an 18- yard run and Harper, who had six receptions for 127 yards on the night, finished the drive with a 39-yard touchdown catch. Novosel's kick moved the 'Lopes in front 21-0 with 8:17 left in the second quarter.

An interception by linebacker Park Penrod set up the next score by the Antelopes, a 14-yard touchdown run by Miller. Novosel's kick followed to increase Avonworth's lead to 28-0.

The 'Lopes scored on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Johncour to Weiser, and Novosel converted the extra point kick to send Avonworth to the locker room leading at the half 35-0.

New Brighton scored on a 23-yard TD pass late in the third quarter and added the extra point kick to put the final score at 35-7.
