The Avonworth Antelopes (5-6, overall; 2-1 in section) took on the Freedom Bulldogs at home this past Tuesday night for their third game of section play, coming out on top in the high scoring affair, 84-71.

The ‘Lopes started off as they have normally done this season -- slowly -- until junior guard Jake Harper caught fire and ignited the Avonworth offense with a pair of three-pointers. The first quarter ended with the score 20-13 in favor of Avonworth.

The second quarter started off the same way for the ‘Lopes with senior Brant McAdams providing 12 points in the paint. Freedom’s Steve Leasure had a different idea in mind, and he went on to drain four three-pointers to conclude the quarter. The teams went to the locker rooms at the half with the host team on top, 43-37.

As the second half began, things appeared to be in favor of the Bulldogs, until the ‘Lopes decided to make a run of their own, scoring19 points in the third quarter and holding a 12-point lead over Freedom heading into the final quarter.

Oddly -- as well as ominously -- the fourth quarter looked as if the Antelopes had decided to shut down defensively for the night, allowing Freedom to score 21 points. But Harper continued to dominate offensively, and with the help of junior Tyreek Davis, to secure the win for the Lopes

Harper led all scorers with 27 points, scoring 15 from behind the arc. Davis added 18 points, and McAdams dropped in 14 points.

The Lopes will ride a three-game winning streak as they travel to Brentwood High School Friday for their contest against the Spartans at 7:30 p.m.
